How to save a Revit file to an older version
Revit has no Save As option for an earlier release. Here is how to get a Revit 2024, 2025, 2026 or 2027 file into an older version, step by step, including linked models, workshared projects, families and templates.
To save a Revit file to an older version, convert it to Revit 2023: upload the newer .rvt, .rfa, .rte or .rft file to RVT Convert and download the Revit 2023 copy. Revit itself cannot save to an earlier release, and a Revit 2023 file opens in every release from 2023 to 2027.
This guide walks through the steps, shows which versions you can save back to, and covers the cases that trip people up: linked models, workshared projects, families and templates.
Can you save a Revit file to an older version in Revit?
No. Autodesk's support article on backward compatibility states that Revit does not have a feature to save to an older version's data format. Each release opens files from earlier releases and upgrades them, but never the other way round. Once a model has been saved in Revit 2026, Revit 2025 and earlier cannot open it.
Inside Revit, the options stop at working around the file: install the newer release, ask someone for an older copy, or export the geometry to another format. Converting the file is the one route that turns the model you already have into a Revit file in an older version. Our guide to opening a newer Revit file in an older version compares every option side by side.
How to save a Revit file to an older version, step by step
- Check which version saved the file. In Revit's Open dialog, click the file once and read the release shown under the preview, or drop it into the free Revit version checker. If it says 2023 or earlier, there is nothing to convert: Revit 2023 opens it directly.
- Save and close it in Revit. The copy you upload is the file as last saved, so save your latest changes first.
- Upload it to RVT Convert. Open the converter and drop the file in, or choose it. Files up to 1 GB are accepted. The page shows the version, build, size, worksharing status and an estimated time before you start.
- Convert to Revit 2023. Click Convert and keep the tab open. Most files take a minute or two; very large models take longer.
- Download the Revit 2023 file. It downloads with
_R2023added to the name, for exampleBlock-A_R2023.rvt, so it never gets mixed up with the original. - Open it in the older release. Revit 2023 opens it as it is. Revit 2024 or 2025 opens it and upgrades it to that release; save it there to keep a copy in that version.
A Revit 2026 model for a consultant on Revit 2024. The architect saves and closes Tower.rvt, converts it and sends Tower_R2023.rvt. The consultant opens it in Revit 2024, which upgrades it on opening, and saves it as their working copy. The architect's own model stays in Revit 2026, untouched.
Which Revit versions can you save back to?
| File saved in | Converted to | Opens in |
|---|---|---|
| Revit 2027 | Revit 2023 | Revit 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 |
| Revit 2026 | Revit 2023 | Revit 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 |
| Revit 2025 | Revit 2023 | Revit 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 |
| Revit 2024 | Revit 2023 | Revit 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 |
| Revit 2023 or earlier | No conversion needed | Revit 2023 and every later release |
Every file comes back as Revit 2023 because that one format opens in all five current releases. To end up with a file in a specific release between the two, such as a Revit 2025 copy of a Revit 2026 model, convert it to Revit 2023, open it in Revit 2025 and save it there. Our Revit version compatibility chart shows how every release pairs up.
What carries over when you save to an older version?
Everything that exists in Revit 2023 comes across as Revit data: elements, families with their types and parameters, views, sheets and materials. A Revit 2023 file cannot hold features Autodesk added in later releases, so where your model uses one, the closest Revit 2023 equivalent is kept.
- Your original is not changed. You download a separate copy, and the newer file stays exactly as it was.
- Check the key sheets. Before sending the converted file on, open it in the older release and look over the views and sheets you rely on most.
- Keep the version in the name. The
_R2023suffix tells everyone which release the file is in. Keep it when you issue the model.
How do you save linked models to an older version?
A Revit model can only load links saved in its own release or an earlier one. If your project links other Revit models, convert each linked model as well as the host. Then, in the older release, open the host, go to Manage Links, select each link and use Reload From to point it at its converted copy.
What about workshared (central) models?
Ask the team to synchronise with central and relinquish their elements first, so the copy you convert includes everyone's work. The converter tells you when you upload a central model. Open the converted file with Detach from Central selected, then use Save As to create a new central model if the team will keep working shared in the older release.
Can you save families and templates to an older version?
Yes. The same steps work for families (.rfa), project templates (.rte) and family templates (.rft). A family saved as Revit 2023 loads into any project from Revit 2023 to 2027, which makes it a safe format for content you share. Our guide to using newer families and templates in an older version covers running one library across several releases.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Save As older version option in Revit?
No. Revit has no option to save to an earlier release, in any version up to Revit 2027. Converting the file is the way to get a copy in an older version.
Can I downgrade a Revit file from 2025 to 2024?
Yes, in two steps: convert the Revit 2025 file to Revit 2023, then open it in Revit 2024 and save it. Revit upgrades the 2023 file to 2024 as it opens.
Does saving to an older version change my original file?
No. You get a new file to download. Uploaded and converted files are deleted from the conversion server automatically after 24 hours.
Is it free?
Yes. RVT Convert is free to use. If it saves you time, a donation helps keep the conversion servers running.
Key takeaways
- Revit cannot save a file to an older version itself; Autodesk confirms there is no such feature.
- Converting to Revit 2023 gives one copy that opens in Revit 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027.
- For a specific release such as 2024 or 2025, convert to 2023, then open and save it in that release.
- Convert linked models too, and reload them from their converted copies.
- Projects, families and both kinds of template all convert the same way.
