What the version checker shows
- Saved in: the Revit release that last saved the file, for example Revit 2026.
- Opens in: every current release that can open it. Revit opens files from its own release and earlier ones, never later ones.
- Build: the exact update of that release that saved the file, named when it is a published update. Our Revit build numbers list has every update from 2022 to 2027.
- Type and worksharing: project, family or template, and whether a project is a workshared central model.
Drop a whole folder and you get a table of every Revit file in it, which you can download as a CSV. It is a quick way to audit a content library before a Revit upgrade, or to see which families a consultant sent will load into your project.
Why check a Revit file's version first?
Opening a file in a newer release upgrades it, and once it is saved there, older releases can no longer open it. Autodesk confirms Revit has no option to save back to an earlier version. Checking first tells you:
- whether a file from a consultant will open in your release before you try,
- whether a family or template will load into a project on an older release,
- whether a model you are about to send will open for the person receiving it.
Our guide on how to check which Revit version a file was saved in covers the other ways to find a file's version, including from inside Revit.
The file is newer than your Revit. What now?
Convert it to Revit 2023 with the RVT Convert converter. A Revit 2023 file opens in every release from 2023 to 2027, so it works for you and for anyone you pass it to. Projects, families, project templates and family templates all convert. See how to save a Revit file to an older version for the step by step.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a Revit file's version without opening it?
Drop the file into the version checker on this page. Revit records which release saved every project, family and template, and the checker shows it in a second, along with the build and which Revit versions can open the file.
Can I check a whole folder of Revit families at once?
Yes. Drop the folder onto the page, or use choose a folder. The checker lists up to 500 Revit files at a time, skips anything that is not a Revit file, and lets you download the list as a CSV.
Which Revit versions can open my file?
Revit opens files saved in its own release and any earlier release, and upgrades them as they open. A file saved in Revit 2025 opens in Revit 2025, 2026 and 2027, but not in Revit 2024 or earlier. Our Revit version compatibility chart shows every pairing.
What does the build number tell me?
The build identifies the exact update of the release that last saved the file. It helps when two people on the same Revit year see different behaviour, or when support asks which update you are on.
What if the file is newer than my Revit?
Revit cannot open files from a later release and has no option to save back. Convert the file to Revit 2023 with RVT Convert: a Revit 2023 file opens in every release from 2023 to 2027.
