How RVT Convert handles your Revit files and your data. Your model is used for one thing only: converting it.
The short version
- Your file is used only to convert it. We do not open, view, share, sell or reuse your models.
- The file you upload is deleted as soon as it has been processed.
- The converted file is kept for 24 hours so your download link works, then deleted automatically.
- Files are processed by our own conversion service, which we operate in the United Kingdom. They are never passed to cloud services, AI services or any other third party.
- No account is needed, and we never sell personal data.
- We handle personal data under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and you can turn analytics cookies off at any time.
Who we are
RVT Convert (rvtconvert.com) is run by Fortress Associates Ltd, London, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 14576806), registered office 202 Mayfly Close, London E3 3ZG ("we", "us"). We decide how the personal data described here is used, so we are its controller under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR). For anything about privacy, email support@rvtconvert.com.
The law we follow
We process personal data in line with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and this policy explains the cookies the site uses, as the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) require. It also gives the information those laws require (UK GDPR Articles 13 and 14). Where the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) applies to you, you have the same rights under it.
Your files
What we receive
The Revit file you choose (.rvt, .rfa, .rte or .rft), together with its name and size.
How your file is handled
Your file travels over an encrypted connection straight to our conversion service. It is processed automatically by our purpose-built conversion engine, in an isolated environment set aside for that one job. Nobody opens or looks at the contents of your model as part of running the service.
How long we keep it
- Uploaded file: deleted as soon as processing finishes, whether the conversion succeeds or not.
- Converted file: kept for 24 hours so the download link keeps working, then deleted automatically. After 24 hours the link no longer works.
- Unfinished uploads: an upload that stops part way is discarded automatically.
When something goes wrong
If a conversion fails, we keep a technical note of the failure (not your model) so we can improve the service. If you contact us about a file that did not convert, we may ask your permission to examine that file to find the fault, and we delete it once we are done.
Your files stay yours
We claim no rights in your files. We never use them to train software, to build examples or for any purpose other than converting them for you.
Personal data inside a model
Revit models can hold personal data, for example names in project information or on title blocks. We treat everything in your model as confidential and handle it only to convert it. Firms using the service professionally can rely on our Data Processing Addendum.
Information we collect when you use the site
Service records
For each conversion our systems record technical details: file name, size, file type, Revit version, timings and the outcome. We use these to run the service, prevent misuse and fix faults, and keep them for up to 30 days. They never include the contents of your model.
Fair-use limits and security
We use your IP address to apply fair-use limits and to stop automated misuse. We do not store the address itself, only a scrambled, one-way form of it, and only for as long as the limit it applies to.
Our own usage statistics
We count page visits and steps such as a file being checked or a conversion finishing. Each record holds: approximate location (country, region and city), browser and operating system family, the page, the site that linked you here, time zone, language, and the file's type, Revit version and size. It holds no IP address, no file names and nothing from inside your model. To work out the approximate location, your IP address is passed to an IP location service (ipwho.is), and the result is stored against a scrambled key rather than your address. A visitor code that changes every day lets us count visitors without following anyone from one day to the next. We keep these statistics for up to 24 months.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. Google sets cookies and processes information such as the pages you view, your device and your approximate location, and may process it outside the United Kingdom. Google's own privacy policy applies. Google Analytics runs when you visit and sets its cookies. To turn it off, choose Reject non-essential in the cookie banner, or use Cookie settings at any time: its cookies are then deleted and it is no longer loaded for you.
Donations
Donations are handled by Stripe. We never see your card details; Stripe tells us the amount and whether the payment went through. Stripe's privacy policy applies to the payment.
Emails
If you email us, we keep the conversation for as long as we need it to help you.
Cookies and browser storage
A small banner on your first visit lets you keep analytics cookies (Accept all) or turn them off (Reject non-essential). The site works the same either way, and we remember your choice for a year.
- Google Analytics cookies (_ga and _ga_ followed by an ID): measure how the site is used; kept for up to two years; deleted if you choose Reject non-essential.
- Saved in your browser only, never sent to us: your cookie choice, your light or dark theme choice, and a note that lets a conversion carry on if you reload or close the page part way. The note is removed when you start another conversion or cancel one, and after 24 hours at the latest.
- Stripe cookies: if you choose to donate, Stripe's payment page sets its own cookies to process the payment and prevent fraud.
Why we are allowed to use this information
The UK GDPR (Article 6) allows personal data to be used only on a lawful basis. Ours are:
- Converting your file and keeping it for download: needed to provide the service you ask for (contract, Article 6(1)(b)).
- Service records, fair-use limits and security: our legitimate interest in running a reliable, secure service (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Our own usage statistics: our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the service (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Google Analytics: our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used (Article 6(1)(f)); you can turn it off at any time.
- Donations: needed to process the payment you choose to make (contract, Article 6(1)(b)).
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have weighed them against your rights, and you can object at any time (see "Your rights").
Who else is involved
- Our web hosting provider serves the website pages. Your Revit files never pass through it.
- Stripe processes donations.
- Google provides Google Analytics.
- ipwho.is turns an IP address into an approximate location for our statistics.
Your Revit files are processed only by our own conversion service and are never shared with any of these companies.
Where your information is processed
Your Revit files are processed only in the United Kingdom. Google and Stripe may process information in other countries, including the United States, under the safeguards the UK GDPR requires for such transfers (Chapter V), such as UK adequacy regulations or approved contract terms. The IP location service may also be outside the United Kingdom.
How we protect your information
- Encrypted connections for every upload and download.
- Each conversion runs on its own, separated from other jobs.
- Download links are long, random and impossible to guess, stop working after 24 hours, and allow a limited number of downloads.
- Access to our systems is restricted to authorised people.
- Files are deleted automatically on the schedule above.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR (Articles 15 to 22) you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to or limit how we use it, or ask for a copy in a portable form. Where we rely on your consent you can withdraw it at any time. We do not make decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similar effects (Article 22). We answer requests within one month, free of charge. Email support@rvtconvert.com. Because we keep files only briefly and do not link them to who you are, details such as the time of the conversion and the file name help us find your data.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
RVT Convert is a professional tool and is not aimed at children.
