How do I save a Revit file to an older version?
Revit has no Save As option for older releases. Upload the newer file here and download it as a Revit 2023 file, which opens in Revit 2023 and every later release. Our guide on how to save a Revit file to an older version covers linked and workshared models too.
Can I convert Revit 2026 to 2025 or 2024?
Yes, in two steps. Convert the file to Revit 2023 here, then open it in Revit 2024 or 2025 and save it. Revit upgrades a 2023 file as it opens, so you end up with a file in exactly the release you need.
Can I save down a Revit family?
Yes. Families (.rfa) and family templates (.rft) convert the same way as projects. Download the family as Revit 2023 and it loads into projects in Revit 2023 to 2027.
What does "saved in a later version of Revit" mean?
Revit shows this when a file comes from a newer release than yours. Revit cannot open it or save back to your version. Convert it to Revit 2023, which opens in Revit 2023 and every later release. Not sure which release a file is from? Use the free Revit version checker.
What is an RVT file?
An RVT file is an Autodesk Revit project: the full building model with its views, sheets and schedules. Revit also uses RFA for families, RTE for project templates and RFT for family templates.
Why can't Revit save to an older version?
Revit files only work forwards. Each release opens files from earlier versions and upgrades them, but has no option to save back. Autodesk confirms Revit has no feature to save to an older version's format.
Which Revit versions can I convert?
Files saved in Revit 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 convert to Revit 2023. Files from 2023 or earlier don't need converting: Revit 2023 opens them directly.
Why convert to Revit 2023?
A Revit 2023 file opens in every release from 2023 to 2027, so one conversion works for anyone on a supported version, whichever they run.
Will my model look the same in Revit 2023?
Everything that exists in Revit 2023 carries across as native Revit data: elements, families, views, sheets and materials. Features Autodesk added after 2023 have no place in a 2023 file, so where the converter meets one it keeps the closest 2023 equivalent.
What about workshared (central) models?
When you upload a central model, the page tells you. Open the converted file with Detach from Central selected, then use Save As to make a new central model if your team works shared.
How large a file can I upload?
Up to 1 GB. Most models convert in about two minutes. Very large ones take longer, and the page shows an estimate for your file before you start.
What happens to my file?
It is used only to run the conversion. Uploaded and converted files are deleted automatically after 24 hours.

No. RVT Convert is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Autodesk. Autodesk and Revit are registered trademarks of Autodesk, Inc.
